My surrogate mother

Every since freshman year, I have been eating out of vending machines that are conveniently located in almost every building on campus. I buy cheap, healthy things most of the time such as apples, granola bars and yogurt, and orange creamsicles that are actually not even fattening, along with the occasional splurge for easy mac, chex mix, or chocolate milk.
When I was growing up my mom was amazing at bringing us snacks in the car when we were on our way to our next extra curricular after school. Always healthy and always there. Since I have flown the nest, sadly, the vending machine is now the substitute for that wonderful convenience.
I noticed the other day however, that I have this deep seated psychological fear every time I swipe my card and make my selection, as the machine so kindly tells me to, that my snack will not vend. It happens. Once in awhile, my chex mix will get stuck right before the metal spiral is finished turning. And then the horror of knowing that my money is wasted, and I have no food! I become one of those sad people that starts lamenting and pleading out loud to the vending machine saying, "NOooo! Come on!" and futilely tries to shake the massive bulk of steel and glass. So everytime now I anxiously watch with bated breath, hoping that the machine will give me what I paid for. Its like gambling. I put my money in, and the machine whirs, and I hope that I am going to get something out. I miss the good old days of snacking on apple slices in the hot car with the A/C at full blast while being chauffeured around. I never knew how good I had it! :)

The space between...

I would like to take a moment to describe one of the ways that I spend my time. My bed at college has this little headboard and a large desk connected to it. But there are spaces that cannot be closed between the wall and the bed on both the top and the side and the bed+desk is way too heavy for me to even budge... This little detail has proved unfortunate for me because, like many single people my age, I sleep with my cell phone. It is my alarm clock and my nightlight, and is almost attached to my body. But the key word is "almost", because the cracks between the wall and bed are are the perfect size for my cell phone to fall into, but are too small for my hand and arm to go down. Do you have any idea how many times my cell phone has fallen into these dark and skinny spaces? I have spent hours on my knees with my face mashed to the mattress, trying to cram my arm and other various objects skinnier than my arm into this dust bunny territory, while holding a flashlight in my mouth. I have spent enough hours trying to retrieve my phone that I have developed an ingenious system that involves masking tape and the sheath of a plastic sword I bought at the dollar store for Halloween :) Of late, to outsmart the problem, I have taken to shoving the edges of my comforter and garbage sacks down there to plug up the space. But today my phone found a new crack that I didn't know it was small enough to fit through! What is all my education worth if I cannot out smart my own bed?? I have now applied copious amounts of tape over the crack in an intricate weaving pattern in another attempt.
So I apologize to the girl who lives below me for the scrapings of a hanger along the wall from one to two thirty in the morning that one night last semester, and to all of you whose calls I have missed while my phone was at the bottom of these horrid crevices. And wish me luck with my tape, garbage sacks, and sword sheath. I will probably need it in the near future.

Cosmo and I are now BFF's

so, i went to the huge BYU vs. U of U basketball game yesterday, and it was so awesome!!! my friends in the ward started camping in line on Wednesday, so that they would have really good seats. Yes almost four days of camping on the sidewalk. Suprisingly there were a lot of people doing the same thing. there was a line of tents, apparently, although i never went to the tent, which i was way sad about. i was supposed to take some "shifts" of being in the tent, but i had two tests, so i just showed up right before the game and had the most amazing seat! there were like 5,000 students directly behind me. it was so loud! but anyway, the game was really close, but we ended up winning by 12 points. but one of the best parts was when cosmo the cougar, which is BYU's mascot, came through the crowd and stood right by where we were during the best point of the game when we were coming up in points from being behind by like 8 points. we got pictures with him, and i was so excited!! and after the pictures cosmo stood next to me and watched the game for awhile, and we were jumping and screaming together, well i guess me and the 10,000 people were screaming, cosmo doesn't talk, but then we scored, and in our excitement, he reached over and hugged me and it was so awesome! we totally had a moment :) and i have always wanted to meet him!! and i did! and he hugged me! yes!

I get too emotionally involved in fictitious stories

I have been reading more lately. I finished Wuthering Heights last week and have read 700 pages of Gone with the Wind, but I had to skip to the end because I had to have some type of resolution to the saga romance between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara. I couldn't take it anymore! I totally love Rhett, he is such a man, but I think that the reason that I got so absorbed into this book was because I think that in too many ways for comfort, my personality is like Scarlett's. And I was waiting on bated breath hoping that despite her many flaws, everything would turn out well for her. I was disappointed. They don't end up together! Grumble. I hate it when that happens. I woke up annoyed the next morning after staying up till three for the second night in a row just to hear that Rhett really meant it when he said his famous "Frankly my dear, I just don't give a d*." All in all however, the book is a classic for good reason. It is frankly fabulous. The way that Margret Mitchell describes everything is poetic. It has a certain Southern rythmn to it that is reminiscent of a sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch. I'm definitely going to finish it, and I highly recommend it. Just don't be like me and sacrifice sleep because you are desperate to learn the fate of a fictitious character who is somewhat similar to you. Because it actually doesn't have any bearing on how your life will turn out. At least that is what I keep telling myself.

Financial statement ratios and such

For all of you who have seen me change my major a billion times I would just like to inform you that one of my favorite classes right now is financial management :) I really actually kind of love it! I get excited to do the homework, and I think that what I am learning is wonderful! So useful, and interesting and awesome. We will see how I feel after the first exam, hahaha, but I just feel good about the major that I have finally chosen. If you happen to remember, pray for me that I will get into the business program - I'm turning in my application this week!

Another Art Project

So I went on a date last weekend to Color Me Mine where I painted this vase. I tried really hard and it turned out really well! I sketched the design on the vase freehand in pencil first and then just painted over what I had drawn. And I was way excited that I got to pick whichever type of pottery I wanted from the selection of plates, mugs, toothbrush holders etc. Considering the sad, plain state of our apartment decor, hopefully this will make me and my roommates seem more domestic by adding flowers and putting the vase on the kitchen table or something. And because I'm such a mooch, all I need now I is someone dashing to supply the flowers :)
